Choanji Temple

Choanji Temple is located in the Sengokuhara area and is famous for the small buddhist sculptures, fall colors, and small koi pond. The Soto Zen temple was originally located in Ubako, but in 1658 it was relocated to Sengokuhara. The precincts of the temple and the woods behind the temple are dotted with 500 small stone sculptures of those who have achieved nirvana, advancing along the path to enlightenment as disciples who followed Buddha. It is also known as one of the “100 Temples of Flowers in Eastern Japan” for its beautiful fresh greenery and autumn leaves.
