Himeshara Grove

On the hillside behind Hakone Shrine is a large grove of more than 100 himeshara trees (Tall stewartia, Stewartia monadelpha). From late May to June, small white flowers bloom on their branches high above the ground. They can sometimes be hard to find. The himeshara grow wild throughout the Hakone region and are easy to notice by their smooth and light brown bark on their trunks. The himeshara grove can be reached by walking up the hill from Hakone Shrine or taking the back entrance from route 75 that is marked by a small red torii gate.
