Mt. Fuji

Splendid views of Mt. Fuji may be seen at only a short distance from Hakone. In fact, each location affords a glimpse of a different aspect of the mountain’s essential nature. Perhaps you could seek your favorite view for yourself. The nearby Gotemba streetscape, for example, offers a lovely contrasting effect, or blend even, with Mt. Fuji. Moreover, this vista also displays a complete view of Mt. Fuji.

There is a toll road to enjoy magnificent views of Mt. Fuji from the windows of your car.

A souvenir photograph with yourself and your car and your passengers is not a bad idea!  Another toll road that passes above the west shore of Lake Ashinoko gives exceptional views of Mt. Fuji in full glory from the Mikuni and Shakushi passes. Hakone’s most popular mountain, Mt. Kintoki, is closely associated with the legend of Kintaro. This is your opportunity to take a souvenir photograph at the mountain hut where you can borrow masakari (hatchet), similar to what Kintaro would have had.

Another excellent location for sightseeing offers a dynamic view of volcanic activity.  Mt. Fuji towers into the sky on the far side of the outer ring of the Somma volcano. Hakone and Mt. Fuji are served well by Gotemba, which acts as a link between the two mountains. Those people wishing to venture to Mt. Fuji will need to go to Gotemba station in the first instance.

Yet, another exceptional view of Mt.Fuji is to be had from the altitude of 1,356 meters at the summit of Hakone’s central crater mountain. In good visual conditions, Mt. Fuji will rise before your eyes!

Over the quiet waters in the early morning on Lake Ashinoko, before the boat sets sail, you may well see a reversed reflection of Mt. Fuji. Contrasting shades of vermilion, and a calm surface, show up the Torii gate of Hakone Shrine to advantage. The iconic image of Hakone is exemplified! Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashinoko are at their best, not forgetting Mt. Fuji with its seasonal views of fresh leaves in spring, the multitude of colors in fall, and the purity of scenery in snow.
