Mountain Fire Festival, Daimonjiyaki

The Daimonji Festival in Gora is held in August and started in 1921. This festival is on the final day of the Japanese week of Obon. Obon is a time when people honor the souls of their ancestors. Many people return to their hometowns and visit family graves to pay their respects. At the end of the Obon week on the side of Mt. Myojo, a large character spanning more than 100m across is lit to help guide the souls back to their world. The large character is the shape of 大, meaning big, is lit by more than 200 fires standing at 2.5m in height. The festival is accompanied by a fireworks display and festivities around Gora Station.
