Yudate Lion Dance

Update:2021.02.24

This festival centers around a traditional lion dance that has been handed down in the districts of Sengokuhara and Miyagino in Hakone. They were selected by the Japanese government as intangible parts of Japanese culture in 1974. In Sengokuhara, it is performed at the festival of Suwa Shrine on March 27 and the festival of Kintoki Shrine on May 5, while in Miyagino, it is performed at the festival of Suwa Shrine on July 15.

The festival centers around a pot of boiling water, yudate. After the yudate ritual is performed the lion stands in front of a boiling kettle of water and purifies it in all directions, east, west, south, north, and south, then purifies the fire in the kettle with bamboo branches and seals the kettle with a sword. Next, he takes the green bamboo from the altar, puts it in the hot water, and stirs it three times. Finally, the lion takes a bamboo branch, stirs the boiling water with both hands, pulls it up and offers it to the gods. It is said that if you are splashed with this water, you will not get sick for a year.
