Yosegi Zaiku, Traditional Wood Marquetry

Update:2021.03.01

Yosegi zaiku (wood marquetry) is a traditional handcraft that started in the Edo period (1603-1868) in the Hakone area. The marquetry is known for creating unique geometric patterns using the natural colors of various wood types. The deep forests of Hakone had many different types of trees to use. These designs are used to decorate boxes, utensils, and many other goods. The most popular form of this craft is the puzzle box. Yosegi woodcraft has been designated as an important part of Japanese culture by the government.

The craft is centered around the mountain village of Hatajuku in Hakone. The artisans combine geometric shaped rods into intricate patterns. It is said there are about 60 basic patterns that can be combined to make an endless amount of designs. These are then glued together in large blocks then thinly sliced to produce paper thin sheets that can be attached to different products. These products are some of the most popular items from the Hakone area.
