The Chisuji waterfall (Thousand Strands Waterfall) is located in the upper reaches of the Jakotsu River, the waterfall is about 3 meters high and 20 meters wide, and is called so because the water flows down like a bamboo screen. This is a rare waterfall because the water source is not a river. The water seems to flow from the ground because it originates from between two layers of ancient lava flows from past Hakone volcanos.
While most waterfalls are tall and narrow, Chisuji Falls is long and short. Many streams of water are flowing quietly and peacefully through the mossy rocks. The water is very clean, but please note that you cannot drink the water here.
For many years, this waterfall was almost unknown to the public, but in the Taisho period (1912-1926) Kyozo Enomoto, the founder of Mikawaya Ryokan, wanted to spread the word about this beautiful waterfall, so he built a path around and to the waterfall.
There are many Japanese maple trees in the vicinity and the autumn colors and greens of spring are magnificent. Around July, fireflies fly around creating a fantastic sight amidst the sound of the waterfall flowing down. This place is also a junction for various hiking trails.
The waterfalls can be reached within walking distance of Mikawa Ryokan and Yunnesan or up the hill from Kowakudani Station on the Hakone Tozan railway.
