Daimyo Gyoretsu, Feudal Lord Procession

Update:2021.02.24

This festival on November 3rd reenacts the long processions of daimyo, regional lords, making their way to the capital during the Edo period (1603-1868).

When Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) seized control of a unified Japan and established his capital in Edo (modern day Tokyo), he required distant feudal lords (daimyo) to alternate their place of residence in alternate years. This led to many long and fantastic processions of samurai, guards, servants, and lords making their way to and from Edo. The Tokaido Road passing through Hakone was one of the main roads connecting southern Japan to the north.

There were many processions of these feudal lords passing through and this festival reenacts this historical parade in the Yumoto area of Hakone. This is one of the most popular festival in Hakone
