On the shores of Lake Ashi in early August is the Lake Ashi Festival Week. This is a week of celebration and festivals that include music, food stalls, cultural performances, and fireworks. The Kosui Festival is on one of these days and the festival’s roots are in the ancient ceremonies held for the nine-headed dragon that is said to live at the bottom of the lake. A boat carries offerings of rice and drops them in the lake for the dragon and spirits of Hakone. There are many different cultural performances during this week in addition to the Kosui Festival. There is also a “Torii-yaki” event which features the burning of erected shrine gates on the lake in dedication to the dragon.
