Place to StayAzaleas and Hotel de Yama

Update:2025.05.04

Nestled along the tranquil shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone is the Odakyu Hotel de Yama. The hotel offers a harmonious blend of historical elegance and natural splendor.

Originally established in 1948 on the grounds of Baron Koyata Iwasaki’s former villa, the hotel has since become a cherished destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and a touch of Japan’s rich heritage. It is most famous in the spring for the bloom of thousands of azalea flowers with Mt. Fuji as a backdrop.

The history of this iconic hotel starts with Baron Iwasaki, the fourth president of the Mitsubishi Group, who constructed his villa in 1911. He envisioned a retreat that embraced the beauty of the surrounding landscape. He meticulously designed the gardens to complement the gentle slopes, ensuring that each bloom enhanced the panoramic views of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji. This dedication to aesthetic harmony laid the foundation for what would become one of Hakone’s most celebrated floral displays.

Today, the hotel’s gardens are renowned for their breathtaking azalea and rhododendron collections. In May, visitors are treated to a vibrant tapestry of colors as approximately 3,000 azalea bushes burst into bloom, showcasing 84 distinct varieties. Among these are rare cultivars dating back to the Edo period, such as the Edo Kirishima and Ryukyu azaleas, which are seldom found elsewhere. The rhododendron collection is equally impressive, featuring around 300 plants, including the historically significant Gomer Waterer, the first Western rhododendron introduced to Japan by Baron Iwasaki himself.

The annual Azalea and Rhododendron Fair, held from late April to mid-May, celebrates this floral spectacle. During this period, the gardens are open to the public, allowing guests to meander through the blooming landscapes and immerse themselves in the serene beauty that has been carefully preserved for over a century. The fair not only highlights the botanical treasures of the estate but also underscores the hotel’s commitment to maintaining the legacy of its founder.

Beyond the gardens, the Hotel de Yama offers a range of amenities designed to provide guests with a luxurious and restful experience. The “Tsutsuji no Yu” hot spring bath, named in honor of the azaleas, offers soothing alkaline waters sourced from the hotel’s own spring—a rarity in the region. Guests can also indulge in treatments at the Spa Montagne or savor exquisite French and Japanese cuisine at the hotel’s restaurants, all while enjoying panoramic views of the lake and mountains.

As the seasons change, so too does the allure of the Hotel de Yama. In June, the gardens come alive with the hues of 230 hydrangeas spanning 25 varieties, while the rose garden reaches its peak bloom in both June and October, filling the air with a sweet fragrance. Autumn brings a tapestry of crimson foliage, and winter offers the serene beauty of snow-capped landscapes, ensuring that each visit provides a unique and memorable experience.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the Odakyu Hotel de Yama invites you to step into a world where tradition and tranquility coexist in perfect harmony. Here, every season paints a new masterpiece, waiting to be discovered.
